  1. Which tests are suitable for travelling by air?

Molecular PCR tests are usually required for travelling abroad. We can provide a certificate written in Lithuanian, English and Russian languages, which is a necessary document for travelling. Rapid antigen tests (either from nasopharynx or saliva) can also be suitable in some countries as an alternative, a certificate is also required. As the requirements tend to constantly change, we recommend checking the information on https://keliauk.urm.lt/.

  1. What are the differences between SARS-CoV-2 PCR and rapid antigen tests?

Molecular tests (COVID-19 PCR or RT-PCR), identifies virus genetic material (RNA) and indicates whether the person is ill or a carrier of the disease at the moment. The test taken from the nasopharynx is the gold standard in the diagnosis of COVID-19. It is reliable and informative when performed at an early stage of infection. Reliability – 99.9 percent.

Rapid antigen test is used for fast and high-quality detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus antigen from nasopharynx or saliva and indication whether the person is ill or a carrier of the disease at the moment. The test is recommended when the first symptoms of the disease are felt, usually 3 to 10 days after infection. Rapid antigen tests have a lower sensitivity, so it is important to highlight that people who may carry lower levels of the virus may receive false-negative results during first days of infection. Negative results should be treated with extreme caution and in case of doubt molecular COVID-19 PCR test should be performed. Reliability – more than 98 percent.

  1. What kind of specimen type is suitable for SARS-CoV-2 PCR and rapid antigen tests?

Specimen for molecular COVID-19 PCR test at the moment is taken from the nasopharynx.

Specimen for rapid antigen test is taken either from the nasopharynx or saliva.

  1. For how long are COVID-19 PCR or rapid antigen tests recognized as valid and suitable for travel or other activities?

As the requirements tend to constantly change, we recommend checking the information:

  1. From which moment is the period of validity of COVID-19 tests counted?

Period of validity of COVID-19 tests is counted from the moment specimen is collected which is specified in the test report and certificate.

  1. How to prepare for COVID-19 PCR or rapid antigen tests?

Before performing a rapid antigen test from nasopharynx: It is recommended not to eat, drink hot drinks, chew gum, rinse your mouth for 30 minutes before the test.

Before performing a rapid antigen test from saliva, it is not allowed to:

  • Eat (30 min. before),
  • drink,
  • smoke,
  • chew gum,
  • rinse your mouth,
  • use medication (if possible).

Before performing a COVID-19 PCR test from nasopharynx: It is recommended not to eat, drink hot drinks, chew gum, rinse your mouth for 30 minutes before the test.

  1. What kind of COVID-19 antibody tests do we perform?

SYNLAB laboratory can perform antibody tests from venous blood. We perform:

  • Rapid antibody test: the result is expressed in qualitative terms (found / not found) and is performed no earlier than 10 days after possible infection. The study makes it possible to assess whether a person does not have an early form of the disease or has already been recovered. The reliability of the test is lower than individual IgG or IgM tests;
  • SARS-CoV-2 IgG (Anti-RBD): The result is expressed in quantitative terms (numerical value) and is performed 14 days after possible infection. The test is recommended after COVID-19 vaccination.
  • SARS-CoV-2 IgM antibodies: The result is expressed in quantitative terms (numerical value) and is performed 14 days after possible infection.
  1. How long does it take to receive antibody test results?

COVID-19 antibody test results are received within 1-2 business days.

  1. Can the laboratory do antibody tests from capillary blood (finger)?

SYNLAB laboratory can perform antibody tests only from venous blood,

  1. Can a certificate be provided for COVID-19 antibody tests?

A certificate cannot be provided for COVID-19 antibody test results. We can offer translation of the results in English or Russian languages.

  1. How to interpret the results of an COVID-19 antibody test?

When the result is provided, you will see the clinical values / range of biological reference values (test rates) on the left. If the result of a quantitative test is higher than the specified limits, it can be stated that the person is immune to COVID-19 (recovered from symptomatic / asymptomatic form of infection or after vaccination). If the result qualitative test is RASTA (“found”)- it can be stated that the person is immune to COVID-19; if the result is NERASTA (“not found”) - it is considered that the person is not immune to COVID-19. It is recommended to consult with general practitioner for further evaluation of qualitative test results or to perform additional tests by a different method.

Along with antibody test results, an information note is provided with information about the results and how they should be interpreted.

  1. When is it recommended to do COVID-19 antibody tests?

It is recommended to perform antibody tests 2-4 weeks after vaccination, infection or a possible contact with someone, who has been infected with COVID-19.

  1. How to prepare for COVID-19 antibody tests?

The analysis will be performed from venous blood so it is recommended not to eat 1-2 hours before the procedure and have some form of identification document when you arrive.
